Personal Experiences in Writing

Tips for writing about personal experiences:

Pre-writing

Choose one experience from your life that is intriguing enough to tell.

Beginning

Consider a beginning that will pique the reader's interest in learning more about the experience.

Body

Use either the simple past or the past continuous tense. If anything happened before the personal experience, use the past perfect tense.

Make some quick notes on your experience.

Don't be concerned about grammar. Spend five minutes at the end proofreading your essay.

Keep every element in mind and try to envision it.

  • Your emotions
  • Your opinions
  • Objects around you (their shape, color, size, ...)
  • The smell
  • The taste
  • Efforts
  • Include the setting: location and time. (Give specifics about the location and time.)

Describe the following events:

in chronological order or employing a flash back technique (depicting / recalling a series of events that occurred prior to the scenes that follow)
Conclusion
Finish by discussing what you gained from the event.

Edit your essay after you've finished it.
