IELTS Essay Questions (04)

Topic: Skydiving and skiing are extremely risky sports that should be prohibited.
How much do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Extreme sports have grown in popularity in recent years, and some say that governments should outlaw them. I absolutely disagree with the assertion that these sports are too risky, and thus believe they should not be prohibited.

Extreme sports, in my opinion, are not as deadly as many people believe. All sports contain some element of danger, and clear regulations and safety measures should always be in place to minimize the likelihood of accidents. Individuals who participate in extreme sports are typically obliged to undergo sufficient training to mitigate the dangers. For instance, everyone interested in skydiving must enroll in lessons with a certified club, and beginners are not permitted to dive alone; they must be accompanied by a qualified professional. Finally, protective gear and technology utilized in sports ranging from motor racing to mountain climbing are always advancing in terms of safety.

While I favor rules and safety measures, I feel that outlawing extreme sports would be wrong and nearly impossible. To begin, I believe that we should all be allowed to choose how we spend our leisure time; as long as we are aware of the risks, I feel that politicians should not prevent us from having fun. A stronger argument against such a prohibition, however, would be the difficulties of implementing it. Numerous dangerous activities, such as base jumping and big wave surfing, are practiced far from the reach of authorities. I can't picture the cops being called to prevent individuals from parachuting over a cliff face or surfing on a remote beach.

To conclude, I would say that individuals should be free to participate in extreme sports as long as they are aware of the dangers and take adequate measures.
